Alright, so I’ve been messing around with this idea of creating a basketball drill book, and let me tell you, it’s been quite the journey. I mean, I wanted something solid, something I could really use to help me out, and maybe other coaches too. It’s not as easy as it looks!
First, I started by just brainstorming all the drills I know. Just get them out of my head and onto paper, you know? Partner passes, pivot drills, 3v2, the whole shebang. I ended up with a huge list, kind of messy, but it was a start.
- Started with the basics: Partner pass and pivot drills.
- Then I moved on to 3v2 passing games.
- I made sure to repeat this for other stuff: dribbling, defending, shooting.
Then came the hard part: organizing everything. I decided to group drills by skill. Like, all the passing drills together, all the shooting drills together. This made way more sense than just a random list. After that, I started sketching out diagrams for each drill. You know, those little Xs and Os that show where everyone is supposed to be on the court. That took forever, but I think it’s gonna be super helpful to see it visually. Then I tried to write down the instructions for each drill. Simple and straightforward language. I didn’t want anything too complicated. It’s all about making sure the steps are clear and easy to follow.
And I also added some variations for each drill. Like, for this one passing drill, I added an option to add a defender. Makes it a little tougher, you know, more game-like. After that, I tested out the drills with my team. I watched them run through each drill, making sure they understood the instructions. I had to tweak a few things based on their feedback. Some drills were too easy, some were too hard. I had to find that sweet spot.
Testing and Tweaking
Finally, I put all the drills, diagrams, and instructions together into a nice, neat format. Now I’m looking at something that looks like a real drill book. I mean, it’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and I’m pretty happy with it. I’m hoping that using this book is gonna make my practices way more organized and productive. I’m excited to see how it helps my team improve over the season. It’s a good feeling to take something from just an idea to something you can actually hold in your hands and use.
This whole process has really taught me a lot. It’s not just about knowing the drills, it’s about how you present them, how you organize them, and how you make them work for your team. I’m thinking about sharing this book with other coaches, too. Maybe it can help them out. Who knows, maybe this is just the beginning. Maybe I’ll keep adding to it, keep refining it. It’s a work in progress, but it’s a good start.
