Well now, let me tell ya somethin’ about St. Francis High School football. This here team ain’t just any bunch o’ boys runnin’ ’round with a ball. No, no! They got a long history, and they been makin’ waves in the world of high school football, you betcha. For years, folks have been talkin’ about ’em, and not always in the nicest way, ’cause they been havin’ their fair share of heartache. But, oh boy, things been changin’ around these parts.
Now, let’s start with the big ol’ heartbreak. It had been five whole years since St. Francis High School last won that big ol’ senior boys Division 1 football championship. That’s five years of folks sittin’ around, wonderin’ when they gonna get their next big win. But just this last weekend, somethin’ changed, and the St. Francis Browns turned all that heartache into joy! They done gone and broke that streak, and let me tell ya, folks were celebratin’ like it was a holiday.
It wasn’t just the folks at the school that were celebratin’, neither. No, sir. Everybody in the area was buzzin’ about the big win. They done beat some of the toughest teams in the league, and folks was sayin’, “Wow, these boys mean business now!” Some of those teams, like Joliet Catholic and IC Catholic, they got a reputation. So when St. Francis went out and knocked ‘em down, well, folks took notice!
Their playin’ was somethin’ else. You got these young boys out there runnin’ and throwin’ like it was their last game. And I reckon the biggest standout was Tyvonn Ransom. Now, I don’t know if you ever heard of him, but that boy can run! He was a major part of the team’s success, especially when it came down to the playoff season. If you don’t know nothin’ about football, let me just say this: he was like a bull out there. Every time they needed a big play, Tyvonn came through, and folks were lookin’ up to him like he was some kinda hero. He helped St. Francis get all the way to the semifinals of the Class 5A for two years straight. I tell ya, that boy’s got wheels!
But it ain’t just Tyvonn Ransom doin’ the work. The whole team, from the first whistle to the last, they all got heart. They got grit. It ain’t no easy thing, puttin’ on that jersey every Friday night, but these boys do it with pride. And, I reckon, they do it ‘cause they love the game. You look out there on that field, and you see boys runnin’ their hearts out, playin’ like it’s their last chance. And for some, it might be, so you know they ain’t gonna hold nothin’ back.
Now, I heard that Saint Francis got themselves a pretty good setup. Their athletic department is top-notch, and they got some real support from the community. Ain’t no wonder they keep gettin’ stronger year after year. Ain’t nothin’ better than havin’ folks standin’ behind ya, cheerin’ ya on, whether you win or lose. And St. Francis sure got that in spades.
These boys ain’t just playin’ for the glory, though. They’re playin’ for each other, for their school, and for all them folks who believe in ’em. You see, when you got that kinda support, it gives you strength you didn’t even know you had. They playin’ for every teacher, every student, and every parent who’s ever sat in them bleachers watchin’ them fight for a win.
Just last October, they took on St. Ignatius, and I tell ya, that game was somethin’ else! Kingston Keanaaina, now there’s a name you better remember! That boy rushed for 212 yards and scored three touchdowns in the second half! Three touchdowns! And I reckon that helped them seal the deal for a big 27-13 win. Folks around here are talkin’ about that game for days, sayin’ it was one of the best they’d seen in years. Kingston’s bound for BYU, and I’m here to tell ya, they ain’t seen the last of him.
So, what’s next for these St. Francis boys? Well, the road don’t stop here. They’ve got big dreams, and they’re workin’ harder than ever to make ’em come true. But I reckon that’s what football’s all about, right? Dreamin’ big, playin’ hard, and always lookin’ for that next win. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a lot more of ‘em in the years to come, makin’ noise and takin’ names. And let me tell ya, folks ‘round here are proud of what they’ve done. You can bet your boots on that.
So, remember this name, folks: St. Francis High School football. They ain’t stoppin’ anytime soon!
